The Mythical Origin of the Workshop

The Call to Adventure

My story begins much like yours, I bet.

It was 1999. I was a sophomore in University.

My religious faith crumbled.

My ego identity crumbled.

I cried out into a void: “Who am I? What is my purpose? Is there a God? Is there anything more than this sack of flesh and bones?”

And out of this existential, spiritual crisis, something emerged from the depths – a subtle serpent’s voice – the voice of the shamanic archetype itself:

"I can show you these things... if you follow me”.

I agreed.

And then the serpent placed its tail into its mouth and the alchemical opus was initiated inside of me.

The spirit of the uroborus unleashed a torrent.

It was destabilising, to say the least.

I heard voices. I beheld visions. I suddenly knew and perceived mysterious things.

I was hyper-inspired, beyond my capacity to channel it effectively.

I filled many journals with creative writing and art, with modern-day mythmaking.

I told myself (and my parents) that I was a “screenwriter” working on the next great epic trilogy that was going to break all box-office records and create a cultural tidal wave of spiritual awakening.

Others began to describe me as a “loose cannon”, or just “crazy”.

And indeed, I was misfiring all over the place, causing damage seemingly every time I opened my mouth.

I started to worry for my own mental health, and others worried about me too.

I didn’t understand what was happening to me, and for a while, I tried to understand it through a materialistic, psychiatric paradigm, diagnosing myself with this or that disorder and category of mental illness.

But then something amazing happened.

I discovered the life’s work of Carl Gustav Jung…

… and really resonated with Jung’s concept of “individuation”.

After diving into his work, I said to myself, “OK phew! I am not going crazy! I am just having an “individuation crisis.”

So I was starting to get a clearer understanding of what was happening: With the collapse of my religious faith and my ego, I was now re-approaching “the spirit world” through my psyche and a direct experience of the “unconscious”, following Jung’s teachings (and example) along the way.

This eventually led me to the concept of “entheogens” (psilocybin mushrooms, LSD, ayahuasca, to name a few).

And entheogens quickly led me to that crucial word: “Shamanism”.

The concept of “shamanism” resonated very powerfully with me. It seemed like the missing link in my self-understanding.

“That’s it!” I said to myself. “THAT’s what has been happening to me! It’s a modern day shamanic initiation!”

But what did that mean?

And what was I supposed to do now?

I was ignorant, but inspired like never before, so I did the only thing I could think of:

I began to study “shamanism” as best as I could.

I saw manifestations of the same phenomenon in every culture, with similar patterns of initiation rites leading to similar results.

I began to understand:

Shamanism” is an archetypal phenomenon that exists in varied forms in every culture across time.
It is deliberately cultivated in some cultures and deliberately persecuted in other cultures.
But it spontaneously emerges everywhere.
If it is suppressed, it goes underground and spreads horizontally, esoterically…
…because it arises to meet the essential needs of the collective human soul, and will always find a way to keep evolving.
It is triggered by crisis and is itself the bringer of crisis (of initiation).
We all have this archetype within us. It is inherent in the human soul and inherent in the collective unconscious.

But as you know, this single primeval archetype has been – particularly over the last 1600 years – persecuted and suppressed, shattered and scattered into fragments.

Where did this ORIGINAL SHAMAN fragment?

The archetypal shaman was dismembered, spread abroad, and the bloody limbs had sunk into the “collective unconscious”.

In indigenous cultures, the “shaman” (or whatever these individuals are called) would serve many functions.

But in contemporary Western culture (and wherever its imperialist tentacles spread), these various shamanic functions have become, at best, constricted and compartmentalized (at worst, demonized and exterminated).

One could be a psychotherapist, or a funeral director, or a storyteller, or a healer, or a priest, or a midwife, or a musician, etc., but…

… there was no longer a sanctioned shamanic role in Western society.

This fragmentation has weakened the potency of the archetype in our culture, forcing shamanic individuals into unnatural limitations that work against the unifying wisdom of the archetype itself.

So, in an effort to unify these fragments within my own psyche, and to help unify the fragments scattered throughout my culture, I resolved to embark on a foolish heroic quest:

I resolved to go on a “shamanic journey” to retrieve the “unified soul” of the shamanic archetype that has been fragmented throughout various realms of our contemporary Western culture.

The Descent to the Underworld

So I began paying attention to anything that struck me as “shamanic”.

But what a broad term!

It kept shape-shifting... but I kept trying to nail it down.

It was a serpent that wove through seemingly every aspect of culture, penetrating into the very depths of the collective unconscious.

Once I had an intuitive feeling for the presence of the archetype, I began seeking out the fragments both deep within myself and out there in various cultural and sub-cultural expressions.

One thread led to the next, and gradually, I started to weave together a map of the fragments.

I threw myself into initiatory study.
I studied archaic patterns of initiation.
I studied esoteric patterns of initiation.
I looked at the life’s work of certain indigenous shamans.
I looked at the life’s work of certain so-called “modern shamans” like Carl Jung.
I studied Jungian psychology.
I studied psychotherapy.
I studied dreams.
I studied myths, both ancient and modern.
I studied alchemy.
I studied visionary art.
I studied esotericism.
I descended to various “underworlds” of our culture.
I studied psychedelics.
I explored the entheogenic use of psychedelics.
I explored various forms of trance.
I went to raves. I went to festivals.
I went to Burning Man.
I explored my sexuality.
I explored my shadow.
I explored the shadows of my culture.
I explored magic.

All the while, I figured…

“So if shamanism is inherently archetypal, then I could become an archetypal shaman, right?”

Wrong! The Fool card of the Tarot.

I thought, naïvely, that archetypal shamanism simply meant ingesting a large dose of psilocybin mushrooms, putting on a blindfold, and banging on a Native drum for hours in order to “go into the spirit world and come back.”

And of course that got me into big trouble!

Unguided by elders or an established tradition, it wasn’t long before I fell into the dark side of the archetype.

To put it in the language of the e-course, I fell into the “3 common pitfalls”: Inflation, faulty discernment, and inadequate (too much) shadow work.

I explored my shadow… excessively.
I explored the shadows of my culture… excessively.
I explored magic (without elders) and fell into sorcery.
I got into big trouble.
I cried out for help.
I was graced with help.
I was sent to the Amazon.
I was lifted out of the abyss.
I found true shamanic elders.
I studied in a lineage.
I worked for many years to undo the damage.
I worked for many years to heal and illuminate my soul.

Looking back, I can now see that my “fall” into the underworld had a powerful redemptive potential.

If I could transmute the darkness into light, the suffering into wisdom, perhaps I could help others who find themselves teetering on the edge of a similar predicament.

And perhaps I had to “go down there” because it is precisely in the underworld where so many fragments of the shamanic archetype were scattered, and where they must now be found today.

I had to go down there to retrieve something that had been lost to Western civilization, dismembered, many centuries ago.

I didn’t have a dedicated elder to guide me in those critical early stages (which cost me dearly), but I certainly did have a crucial “mercurial guide” throughout the whole process: Carl Jung.

Jung made a similar journey himself, and spoke about it at length his autobiography, “Memories, Dreams, Reflections”.

And it was Jung’s example that I endeavoured to follow.

Jung succeeded in his quest.

But why? What was the secret of his success?

For starters, he documented everything. He left his own Ego a golden thread as he plunged down into the depths of his own Soul and the collective soul of Western civilization.

So I did the same thing.

I documented everything.

I captured the whole ordeal in writing.

And then, I cooked it…
… and cooked it…
… and cooked it some more.

I refined and separated.
I recombined and synthesized.
I distilled and distilled and distilled some more…
… in search of the “quintessence” of the archetype.

And gradually, a humble glimpse of the original unity of the shamanic archetype began to emerge out of this alchemical chaos.

Returning with the Boon

I remember my own courageous folly.

When I embarked on my quest to recover the fragments of the shamanic archetype spread abroad our modern culture, I had little clue what I was signing myself up for.

In many ways, it was a foolish endeavour.

There were times when I regretted my audacity.
There were times when I suffered for my ambition.
There were times when I feared I had become lost.
There were times when I had definitely become terribly lost.

But in those times, it was the warm and triumphant spiritual presence of those who had come before me – and successfully made the same journey – that encouraged me, guided me, protected me (and saved my ass) from the more serious dangers. And those elders inspired me to accomplish my descent, and return with something valuable to share.

So in late 2016, approximately 12 years after I resolved upon my quest, and 17 years after the onset of my initiatory process, I finally returned with a boon in hand to share with my culture.

This boon is the Shamanic Archetype Workbook – the foundation stone for the first course of the School of Christo-Hermetic Shamanism.

When I sat down to flesh out the various facets of the shamanic archetype, drawing on my experiences and my studies, the entire workbook virtually dictated itself to me.

I won’t say I “channelled” it. That would discount the essential role played by my Ego.

But I can say that the moment I started writing things down, the workbook quickly and decisively unfolded according to its own will and seemingly pre-determined design.

Apparently, I had done so much bold and fruitful inner work over the previous 17 years that my Ego was now capable of bringing down and clearly articulating the inspiration from my Higher Self.

So after many harrowing experiences…

And so much bold and even reckless research...

After throwing myself headlong into the contemporary manifestations of the shamanic archetype, getting burned and wounded along the way...

I was finally able to return to my culture with a useful boon – an authentic map to guide those who would make a similar journey.

...and sharing the boon!

An integral part of the shamanic archetype is the notion of “returning with the boon to share with the tribe”.

Now you know what went in to the retrieving of this boon.

It’s the distillation of 23 years (as of 2022) of serious initiatory work.

It’s a transmutation of a lot of suffering that I brought on myself through my audacity and arrogance (qualities that were, I now realize, necessary for me to embark in the first place).

But the thought of others benefitting from it…

… is precisely what makes it all worth it.

As they say in Brazil, valeu a pena! (it was worth the pain!)

So, I truly and sincerely want to share it with you.

"Over the past twenty years I have been studying different modalities of healing and discovering authentic self. About Andrew Camargo

I have been studying Archetypal Shamanism, Entheogenic Spirituality, European Alchemy, Jungian Psychology, Modern Mythology and Visionary Art for the past 23 years.

I earned my B.A. from Yale University in 2002 studying Literature and Psychoanalysis, when I was introduced to the work of C.G. Jung, and the mysterious Art of Alchemy. In 2009 I earned my M.A. from the Pacifica Graduate Institute studying Jungian Psychology and Mythology. Since 2006 I have participated in and extensively journaled over 550 Ayahuasca ceremonies in the Santo Daime tradition, and currently co-lead a Daime Church here in the Sacred Valley with my wife.

Throughout my studies, I realized that the art of spiritual Alchemy was Western civilization’s own version of shamanic initiatory wisdom, and as such, it had something very unique and valuable to offer the modern seeker – provided its arcane symbolic language could be decoded. So I embarked on a sustained effort to decode the magical connection between Esoteric Alchemy and Entheogenic Shamanism, Esoteric Christianity, Jungian Psychology, and Modern Mythology...and nothing could have prepared me for what I discovered: A magic key to unlock treasure beyond compare!
